Fans stripped to their shorts and treated the 80,000-capacity venue as a waterpark, plunging into the gangways of the upper tiers.
Incredibly, the game – between Sao Paulo and Palmeiras – still went ahead with some fans electing to watch while bobbing up and down in deep pools of rainwater.
Referee Marcelo Aparacido Ribiero de Souza delayed the kick-off by an hour in an attempt for the groundstaff to make the surface more playable.
Eventually, the game kicked-off, against the wishes of former Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, now boss at Palmeiras, who wanted it postponed. There were more problems when the match had to be stopped for 15 minutes in the first half because of a floodlight failure, shortly after Sao Paolo took the lead.
But play resumed and honours ended even when a late sub, Adriano, equalised with five minutes remaining to earn a 1-1 draw.
