Bayern Munich sporting director Christian Nerlinger has admitted defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga title race and announced that his team will aim for a second place finish.

“Third place in the Bundesliga would be difficult to swallow,” he told reporters. “Our goal is to be second. This is now our German Cup, we must concentrate on it.”

Nerlinger’s comments come after Bayern suffered consecutive home losses to Dortmund and Schalke, which put to rest any hopes of die Roten finishing this season with a domestic title.

“It’s a very difficult situation, we are aware of that. It was not just a bitter Pokal loss; in the Bundesliga we are also in a very dangerous and unsatisfactory situation.”

Commenting on Bayern’s upcoming match with Hannover, Nerlinger was cautiously confident.

“We need to prepare the players so that on Saturday they will give their usual performance. I am convinced that we will get this done. Everyone is aware of how important this game is.”

Finally, Nerlinger quashed rumours of Louis van Gaal’s imminent dismissal from his coaching role at Bayern.

“The coaching debate may be public, but not from [the Bayern management]. It is not our policy to change coaches every three days.”
