West Ham United full back Lars Jacobsen praised his side’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday, insisting that the result can give the Hammers confidence in their battle against relegation.

West Ham have improved significantly since the turn of the year, and Thomas Hitzlsperger’s recovery from injury has coincided with the Hammers up-turn in form. He made his Premier League debut for the club against Liverpool, and Jacobsen has hailed the performance as one of the best of the season.

“I think it’s one of the top performances, no doubt about that,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think it was a fully deserved victory. I know the last 20-25 minutes, we were a little bit on the heels.

“I think it’s normal in our situation. You get a little bit scared of conceding goals.

“But I think in the main part of the game,” he added. “We played brilliant football, we created chances and we defended well.”

The Hammers have now moved to level on points with Wolves, who sit 17th, and Jacobsen thinks the confidence that they team will have picked up from Sunday’s victory will stand them in good stead for the rest of the season.

“Obviously, the three points were very important – we all know about that,” he added.

“But, mentally, beating Liverpool is tremendous and hopefully it can give us a lot going into the next couple of games.

“It’s not enough to win. We need to win some more games and hopefully it can help us, this victory.”
