Fulham manager Mark Hughes has heaped praise on centre-back Brede Hangeland by claiming that he is as good a defender as any in the Premier League.

Hangeland put in another impressive display in Sunday’s draw with Manchester City, leading to his boss dishing out more credit.

“As a ball-playing centre-half, Brede is as good as they come,” he told reporters.

“Brede is one of those players that you don’t realise how good he is until you actually work with him.

“There are a number of those players at Fulham. In that sense, I was delighted with what I discovered there.

“He can see the type of passes he played in the build-up to our goal [against City]. He doesn’t just want to clear his lines.”

Hangeland’s style has seen many managers admit their admiration, and he was a target for Arsenal before Arsene Wenger brought in Laurent Koscielny.

Many admirers like the Hangeland’s ability to spot a pass but this can at times get him into trouble with his manager.

He added: “On occasion he will get a little bit of criticism from me because we can sometimes overplay.

“But it is great to see the kind of pass he played to Andy Johnson.”
