Scott Parker believes West Ham United’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool is a massive one in their quest to escape the Premier League relegation zone.

The Hammers led after the influential midfielder poked home from outside the area, with Demba Ba adding a second on the stroke of half time.

Liverpool pulled a goal back through Glen Johnson, but Carlton Cole’s stoppage time goal made sure of the victory, leaving Parker and his team-mates in optimistic mood.

“It’s a massive win for us,” Parker told BBC Sport. “Obviously it was a difficult game today [against] Liverpool, first half we played some good stuff and deservedly were ahead, and we’re pleased to get the three points.”

The England international admitted the Hammers had feared letting their two-goal lead slip after Johnson’s strike for the visitors.

“I’d be lying if I stood here and said we wasn’t [concerned about conceding],” he said. “I think the way the season’s gone for us we normally find ourselves in them positions, the other team gets a goal back and it becomes a bit nervous.

“But Carlton came on today, did very well and got the third which eased it a little bit, but we fully deserved our win today.

“I thought we put Liverpool under immense pressure at times and they were struggling a bit. It was a pleasing result.”

West Ham remain in the bottom three on goal difference, but Parker thinks manager Avram Grant has enough quality at his disposal to guide the club away from trouble.

He added: “You look at our squad on paper and we’ve got a strong squad. We’ve got strong players up front who can score goals like you’ve seen over the last few weeks and we just need to win games now.

“We know we’re at the right end of the season now, we’re coming towards the end, we’ve got however many games we’ve got left and we need to win some games.

“I think we’ve been angry and frustrated all year but I’ve said it many a time before, the table doesn’t lie, we’re there for a reason because we’ve not performed at times.

“But in saying that, I think we’ve always believed – even at times when it’s been really bad – that we can get out of this and we still certainly do.”
