Birmingham City won the League Cup for the first time since 1963 by beating Arsenal 2-1 at Wembley on Sunday afternoon with a goal each from Nikola Zigic and Obafemi Martins and the Nigerian striker couldn’t hide his delight at the final whistle.
Birmingham took the lead through a Zigic header after 28 minutes, a goal that was cancelled out just before half-time in the 39th minute by a great strike from Robin van Persie.

On-loan Rubin Kazan striker Martins scored the winner with a tap-in in the 89th minute after an embarrassing mix-up between Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, match-winner Martins said: “I think this is the most easiest goal that I’ve ever scored in my career and it’s very important.

“I’m glad I scored today and we won – I’m very happy.

“The gaffer said to me I was going to come on in the second half and I was going to try my best. The gaffer did it right. I think it was my second touch.

“I am happy for the players and the fans because Birmingham needed this trophy.”
