The Russian has struggled with a calf injury which has kept him sidelined for the majority of the season, and although the 27-year-old returned after a 17-game lay-off against Everton last Saturday, speculation continues to mount regarding his future at Stamford Bridge, with a return to his home country being touted as a preferred destination.
“I have a contract until 2013 and I hope to play a big role,” Zhirkov told the club’s official website.
“It is good to be back among my team-mates after some frustrating months in the treatment room, but now I am looking to the future and want to play an important part in the squad.”
Zhirkov admitted he was not expecting to remain on the sidelines for such a long period and having only signed for Chelsea in 2009 from CSKA Moscow, the Russian is targeting an influential role in the first team.
“It took longer than I wanted for me to get fit again but now I am back I want to show everyone that I can be an important player for Chelsea,” he said.
“We are still competing for trophies and have a lot of important matches where the full squad will be needed so I want to play my part.”
Zhirkov has expressed his relief at returning and despite the Chelsea’s league position, the versatile left-footer targets silverware this term.
“Coming back against Everton gave me a great feeling, and although we lost on penalties it gave me confidence to be back on the pitch,” said Zhirkov.
“Now we have to look forward and concentrate on the games ahead of us because it could still be a very successful season for Chelsea.”
