NASA’s most experienced orbiter – and the most-flown spacecraft ever – lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center under sunny skies on Thursday for an 11-day assignment to resupply the International Space Station.
Discovery’s all-American crew of six will also deliver a module called Leonardo, which will be permanently attached to the space station to provide more storage space.
The flight was initially supposed to take off last November, but cracks in the tanks caused nearly four months of repairs. Discovery was pushed off the launch pad while NASA engineers completed repair work.
Another shuttle, Endeavour, is set to take off in April in what will be the last shuttle launch scheduled for the US program.
