BENIN – THE Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, has faulted the setting up of a fresh Visitation Panel to the University of Benin, UNIBEN, just as he urged the Federal Government to release the White Paper on the previous exercise for the period of 2004-2009, when Prof. Emmanuel Nwanze was Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
The monarch, who faulted the decision by the Federal Ministry of Education to dispatch a Visitation Panel to the University, when the administration of the current Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Osayuki Oshodin, was barely one year in office, said the action was “suspicious” and warned against actions capable of destabilizing the current administration of Prof. Oshodin, who is the first Bini son to become Vice-Chancellor of the university since the inception of the institution 40 years ago.
The Oba bared his mind when members of the newly constituted Visitation Panel, led by Prof. Eyo Okon, paid him a courtesy visit at his palace. It will be recalled that Benin youths and Committee of Benin Elders had protested the action of the Federal Government and vowed to resist any attempt to scuttle the administration of the current Vice-Chancellor.
However, Oba Erediauwa described the alleged failure to release the white paper on the previous panel headed by Prof. Peter Okebukola as absurd and suspicious, saying that the action was capable of discouraging people from making submissions to the panel in future.
