A PET parrot has been reunited with his British owner after apparently spending the freezing winter in a chicken coop.

Jack, a Blue-fronted Amazon parrot, flew away from his home near Liverpool, northern England, in late November, after his owner Jerry Williams forgot the bird was on his shoulder.

After a frantic search and having distributed hundreds of “missing parrot” posters, Williams, 58, and his wife, Irene, 55, became convinced their feathered friend would not survive the UK’s freezing winter.

However, the 12-year-old parrot was discovered two months later, some 15 miles away at Chester Zoo – clucking like a chicken.

“During his time on the loose he must have taken shelter and obtained food in poultry sheds. Parrots mimic the sounds they hear.” said zookeeper Andy Woolham, who brought Jack to safety.

“I could tell he was ravenously hungry so I enticed him down with a grape. No parrot can resist a black grape,” he added.

Williams, who had also contacted radio stations, vets and local newspapers for help in finding Jack, was “absolutely speechless” when the zoo contacted him.

“I thought I’d never see him again. I’ve had him for almost 10 years so I was devastated when he vanished. It’s just wonderful to have him back,” he said.
