Fifa president Sepp Blatter has sent his sympathy and condolences to Somalia following the death of one of the countries brightest football stars, who was killed by a suicide bomber.

In Mogadishu on Monday a car bomb exploded, killing a number of victims in close vicinity and among those people was Under-20 Somalian international Abdi Salann Mohamed. Two other squad members suffered injuries along with 35 others, 10 people being killed in the blast.

“On behalf of Fifa, I wish to send our condolences to you, the Somalian football community and most importantly, all family, friends and loved ones of the victims. Please let them know the football community stands by their side,” Blatter was quoted by the BBC.

Somalia’s federation head Mahmoud Nur also gave his condolences and commitment to prevent such things happening again.

“On behalf of the entire family of Somali football I am sending my heartfelt condolence to the families, relatives and friends of the slain football player Abdi Salaan Mohamed Ali,” said Nur in a statement.

“He was one of our best players and was recently added to the national Under-20 squad.

“We are committed to continuing our duty in the war-torn country until we meet death,” Nur added.

Blatter and Nur are set to meet at the Confederation of African Football meeting on Wednesday held in Sudan.
