Honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani is in hospital following a suicide bid. The 31-year-old – suspected over the killing last November of his bride Anni – had taken an overdose of pills. Worried relatives were at his bedside in Bristol.
A source at the hospital said of the suicide attempt: “It was very serious.” Dewani had lost TWO STONE in the weeks before his suicide bid, it is claimed. The care home tycoon was rushed to hospital after taking an overdose of pills. Distraught relatives were at his bedside yesterday.
Last night it emerged that family members had become concerned about his health. And it was revealed he had not been sleeping as the pressure of the case took its toll. A source at the Bristol hospital treating him said: “He was brought in after he tried to kill himself. It isn’t known what he took, but it was very serious.
“His family were very concerned, but he’s getting round-the-clock care now.” Dewani, 31, is suspected over the alleged contract killing of 28-year-old Anni – his bride of just two weeks – in Cape Town, South Africa, last November. Concern had been raised in recent days over whether he would receive a fair trial after a top prosecutor in South Africa branded him a “murderer”.
Pretty Anni, from Sweden, died on honeymoon after the couple’s taxi was hijacked in Cape Town’s Gugulethu township.
She was found in the back of the dumped cab with a bullet wound to her neck. Their driver Zola Tongo, 31, was jailed for 18 years in December. He told a court that Dewani paid him to have his wife killed. Dewani, taken to hospital on Sunday, has denied these claims. He is awaiting a May extradition hearing. Two others, Xolile Mngeni and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, are due in court this Friday to face charges of murder, robbery and kidnap.
