The Chief Responsibility Officer, Effective Parents Centre, Mr. Steve Onyekwere, has called for the rebranding of the mentality of African parents. Onyekwere, at news briefing in Lagos on Friday, harped on the need for the revival of core African values.

He said, “Recent developments in the society indicate a crisis in the family today. The mentality of African parents need rebranding. This rebranding goes beyond the provision of daily family needs. It is about the revival of core family values.”

A theologian and philosopher by training, Onyekwere called on the government to make effective parenting an agenda through ministerial policies. He said, “Parenting, which should be the most important concern of every purposeful system, has been relegated to the background. The desire for discipline in all family stakeholders should be awakened.”

The centre, set up by concerned Nigerians desirous of affirmative change, will launch a campaign on effective parenting on March 26. “The pickpockets, robbers and prostitutes we see on the street come from families. If we agree that children learn what they live, then we should put up sound structures that turn out effective parents who provide sieved contents for what children learn,” Onyekwere said.
