New Ghana coach Goran Stevanovic passed his first major test after guiding the Fifa World Cup quarter-finalists to beat neighbours Togo 4-1 in Antwerp on Tuesday night.
The Serbian gave Sulley Muntari his first start for the Black Stars since July last year and the Sunderland new boy put up a rolled-up-your sleeves performance. The former Partizan Belgrade coach also gave Bernard Kumordzi a starting role and played two attackers upfront which yielded the dividends to goals.
The team struggled to score more goals under former coach Milovan Rajevac who earned rave reviews though for his defensive parsimony during his two year reign. Ghana drew first blood in ten minutes through Dominic Adiyiah but Togo quickly responded with the equalizer after the break. Jonathan Mensah restored the lead and the Black Stars went 3-1 up thanks to an own goal.
Samuel Inkoom who replaced striker Prince Tagoe finished off a perfect move by in-form Dominic Adiyiah to seal the deserved victory. Stevanovic must now prepare his troops for next month’s 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Congo and a friendly against England at Wembley on 29 March.
