President John Evans Atta Mills has declared an intention to compel all officers of the Customs Division (formerly called CEPS) of the Ghana Revenue Authority to publicly declare their assets apparently to check deep-seated corruption within the ranks of the division.
Particularly, he has directed that people aspiring to join the CEPS should be made to declare their assets. Besides, President Mills has indicated a strong intention to transfer all corrupt officials who were captured in the latest video of ace investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The President made this declaration when he paid an unannounced visit to the Tema Harbour even as he grappled with astonishing revelations of bribery and corruption uncovered by Anas.
Much as his visit has been commended, analysts are wondering how the President’s intention about asset declaration was supposed to help check corruption given that the declaration of assets has not deterred corruption among the political class.
