President John Evans Atta Mills has lauded the excellent relations between Ghana and Togo, saying the two countries have become closer than ever. “We are happy for the improved cordial ties between our countries,” he said, adding that Ghanaians and Togolese are one people and “we should build on our strengths.”
President Mills said this in an interaction with the outgoing Togolese Ambassador to Ghana, Jean Pierre Tete Gbikpi-Benissan, who called at the Castle, Osu yesterday to bid farewell after serving seven years in Ghana.
According to the President, economic ties between Ghana and Togo had been very rewarding, but noted that there was more room for improvement. “Let us work together more so that our cooperation would inure to the benefit of our people who share the same values and aspirations,” he said.
He also urged the people of the two neighbouring countries to work together at the grass root level, and should not allow the artificial borders to prevent them from forging partnerships. President Mills pledged Ghana’s commitment to consolidating the gains of the co-operation between the two countries.
He commended Mr. Gbikpi-Benissan for his immense contribution towards enhancing the cordial relations between Ghana and Togo. He described Mr. Gbikpi-Benissan, also the outgoing Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana, as a worthy ambassador, who served his country and Ghana very well.
He urged him to continue to be an ambassador of Ghana in his future assignments. Mr. Gbikpi-Benissan, thanked the government and people of Ghana for the support offered him during his duty tour.
The support and cooperation, he said contributed to the successful collaboration between the two nations, as well as the success in his leadership of the diplomatic corps. He said he would take along from Ghana the lessons of democracy, good governance, rule of law and economic management.
