West African nation Ghana is currently ranked Africa number one on the latest FIFA/Coca-cola rankings and FA vice president Fred Pappoe said it puts a lot of pressure on his side.
Speaking to Joy Sports he said the top spot could boost high profile player transfers if the country strives high to retain it in subsequent rankings.
“Definitely the profile of the team will be enhanced by this new ranking,” the FA boss said. “It brings us a feel-good-factor and then boosts the esteem and pride of the team.”
“For some of them too it would enhance their chances because some countries are very particular about rankings when you apply for work permit to ply your trade. It’s also a challenge to us because it is one thing getting on top but the crucial thing is staying there,” he added.
This is the second time the four-time African champions have been ranked as Africa’s number one. The Pharaohs of Egypt have dominated the position for months but relinquished it to the Black Stars in this latest ranking when the Ghanaians moved one place up to 15th in the world.
