Dr. Kwabena Adjei, Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), now wants to be called Nana Okumkra or Togbega Dadi Wula The First and The Last. The new self-conferred title literally means the unprecedented chief cat killer.
Dr. Adjei conferred the title upon himself last Sunday when he addressed the NDC members at a rally in Ho to mark the second anniversary of the Mills administration.
He said his statement that “there are many ways of killing a cat” when he called for the cleansing of the judiciary was misconstrued by illiterates. As a result, people gave him various names. He alleged that Daily Guide named him “Nkonya Terminator’. Dr. Adjei said although he had never a killed a cat, he enjoyed cat meat. He recalled that there were times when people shouted “kill the cat” anytime they saw him.
He said his pronouncement was in the best interest of the country. The NDC chairman caused fear and panic when he called for the cleansing of the judiciary since some judges were corrupt.
He declared that if the judiciary was not cleansed, the party would advise itself as “there are many ways of killing a cat.” The statement shocked the judiciary and the entire nation, a situation that made the party chairman receive more opprobrium from concerned Ghanaians who feared that the revolutionary era where some judges were killed could be revisited.
President John Evans Atta Mill at his recent conference with senior editors, asked a reporter if he (President) looked like a cat hunter after the reporter asked for the President’s comment on the issue. Since then the ‘cat-killing’ issue had died down until last Sunday when Dr. Adjei gave himself the title Nana Okumkra or Togbega Dadi Wula 1 and last.
