Ghana and Sunderland key Asamoah Gyan emerged the winner of the head-to-head clash with his compatriot and goalkeeper Richard Kingson in England on Saturday.
The Sunderland striker’s side defeated Blackpool 2-1 away on Saturday in the English Premier League to grab the bragging rights.
Gyan won the head-to-head clash in a game which has implications for the reputations of both players on and off the field.
Gyan was under pressure following the departure of Darrent Bent and even though he played as the sole striker he set up the first goal before playing the part in the other which broke the hearts of the home fans.
Gyan was out to prove he is worth every penny of the £13.5m that the club paid for him. Sunderland travelled to the Fylde Coast with only one fit striker – Gyan – available, and they employed the 4-5-1 formation which has been seen on a number of occasions this season. The visitors’ quick start was rewarded when they took the lead on the quarter-hour.
Gyan was key, waiting for just the right moment before threading a beautiful through ball into the path of Richardson. The midfielder did the rest, taking the ball in his stride and slotting a left-footed shot neatly under the advancing Richard Kingson.
It was the second meeting between the two players since Gyan moved to England in August last year.Kingson had the better of Gyan in their first meeting, pulling off a string of fine saves at the Stadium of Light as Gyan served notice that for all his maturity in front of goal these days, he is still prone to the occasional spectacular misses.
