The NDC Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West, Hon Aquinas Quansah has condemned the Press conference held by the flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo Addo, describing it as inessential and pointless. He believes that the NPP Flagbearer only wanted to be heard after a long silence, but his way of comeback was awkward.
According to him, whatever the NPP flagbearer said at the Press conference was something that is common knowledge to all. He said Nana Addo’s call for President Mills to go with ECOWAS is unnecessary since President Mills position has always been to stick with ECOWAS.
The Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2012 elections, Nana Akufo Addo called on President Mills to get involved and support ECOWAS and other international bodies to resolve the Ivorian crises peacefully.
“The President is respectfully urged to use his good offices to intervene with President Gbagbo to ensure that the will of the Ivorian people is respected as well as the position of the international community, as expressed by the ECOWAS at a meeting at which His Excellency the President was present.
Stating the NPP’s position on the Cote D’Ivoire crises, Nana Akufo Addo said ‘everything should be done to avoid the specter of Cote D’Ivoire descending into the status of a rogue state whose leaders act in defiance of domestic and international law’. He added that “bloodshed and chaos should not be the price for an individual seeking to remain in office at all cost.”
But speaking on e-TV’s Breakfast TV Newspaper Review, Hon. Aquinas said the noise making from the NPP is unnecessary since President Mills has not done a volte-face in anyway. He lambasted Nana Addo for failing to proffer a solution to the Ivorian crisis at the press conference.
“I think that for some time now, people have not heard of him and he just wanted to make some statement so he could be heard but this was the wrong way to go…I was listening to some NPP members on the Cote D’Ivoire crises and the involvement of President Mills and it was heartbreaking,” he said.
He insisted that President Mills has been very consistent with his position of supporting ECOWAS in whatever decision they seem right.
“This shouldn’t even be an argument, Mills signed the communiqué of ECOWAS and he still stands by what he signed. Mills has never said he is not going with ECOWAS, what he said was he wouldn’t be able to commit troops because his army is over stretched and this is not the first time an ECOWAS country is not able to contribute to ECOWAS mission. President Mills has always said he will go with ECOWAS and the President that I know is not someone who says something and goes back on his words,” he said.
