National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Lower Manya, Hon Michael Teye Nyaunu, is defiant, a day after some executives of his constituency threatened to campaign against him if he seeks re-election as the party’s candidate for the next parliamentary polls.
In a strong response to his detractors in the constituency who called into Eye Witness News on Wednesday January 19, Hon Nyaunu insists none of his constituency executives would campaign against him and that those who spoke may be impersonators. In any case, they displayed what he called “juvenile delinquencies” and “political immaturity” not worth responding to.
The said executives were provoked by the MP’s comments in Wednesday’s interview with Citi News during which he blasted the party leadership, accusing some of them of neglecting their core duty of running the party and instead concentrating on amassing illegitimate wealth for themselves.
In that interview, the controversial lawmaker also warned that the party could lose the 2012 polls, if President John Mills does not intervene to call corrupt government appointees and NDC executives to order.
His comments have since angered some NDC executives in the constituency, who have vowed to do everything possible to derail any plans by Hon Nyaunu to seek re-election. But, Hon Nyaunu has called their bluff.
“When you are talking to people who are so myopic, or people who are so myopic come into the main line like that, at times when they pass comments like this you leave it.
“But I describe this, as I always put it, these are juvenile delinquencies, political immaturity, that is what they are doing.
“They call me a serial embarrassment. First and foremost, who stops somebody from contesting in this country, except the Constitution?… Do they have the mandate, do they have the authority to tell me I should not contest on my party’s ticket?
“I am very popular in my constituency. If I were to run (for elections) now in my constituency I would win… Go and tell Ben Ephson to share his experience with you when he was doing his analysis during our voting time. He said ‘for the first time Lower Manya (MP) is going to lose the seat because Nyaunu has passed comments and its not good and people have raised it against him.’ When the results came Ben Ephson realised that I increased my winning margin.”
“I have 100% support of my constituency executives.”
