Police in Obuasi in the Ashanti region are pondering over the charges to be brought against the notorious Carl Wilson who was arrested with a loaded gun and knife.
Speaking to Joy News, the Obuasi Divisional Police Commander, Chief Supt. Emmanuel Amissah said, “We were hinted that there was this gentleman with a weapon on him so we accosted him and truly he was having a weapon- a pistol- on him as well as a bullet proof jacket and he indicated to us that he was from the national security, that is why he was wielding a weapon.”
Chief Supt. Amissah confirmed that the person, upon investigation, revealed that he was Carl Wilson. He said the police were therefore carrying out further investigations before coming out with the next course of action against him.
It will be recalled that a football match between Ashgold FC and New Edubiase United at the Len Clay stadium in Obuasi was called off last Wednesday due to ‘insecurity’, amidst allegations of rowdy behaviour by Carl Wilson, one-time strongman of the Confiscated Vehicles Allocation Committee and a serving National Security operative.
The man, said to be wearing a bullet-proof jacket and carrying a loaded pistol and knife on his body, got Ashgold supporters agitated when he branded the loaded gun.
He was sent out of the stadium and into his car by policemen in an attempt to calm down the angry supporters, who were chanting war songs and beating drums wildly.
Chief Supt. Emmanuel Amissah, Obuasi Divisional Police Commander, confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE and added that the pistol and the jack knife were taken from Carl Wilson after he admitted to having weapons in his possession.
The match was consequently called off as a result of the incident.
President Mills sacked Carl Wilson last year as head of the Confiscated Vehicles Committee for his alleged role in the disappearance of some vehicles and after a series of demonstrations by members of the National Democratic Congress.
The conduct of the National Security operative, who claimed to be an official of the New Edubiase United football club, seemingly eroded the confidence of the Ashgold supporters.
The supporters accused the security agents of ‘over protecting’ the visiting team, the paper gathered.
The police commander also said there were a few scuffles “here and there.”
According to Chief Supt. Amissah, judging from what was going on and the lack of police reinforcement, the safety of fans at the stadium could have been compromised. The match officials were thus quickly advised to call off the game.
“The Edubiase team was escorted safely to its base at Bekwai,” he disclosed, adding that the personnel of the Police Service were strategically withdrawn later.
