The Akim Oda-based Universal United Youth Organisation (UUYO), has embarked on a public education campaign to sensitize the youth in the area to appreciate the real dangers of HIV/AIDS.
Mr Eric Pinaman Asare, President of the organization, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the programme had become necessary because although some of the youth in the area were aware of the disease, most of them were not fully aware about the danger associated with it, due to the high illiteracy rate.
He explained further that some of the programmes initiated by UUYO included drama on HIV/AIDS, the formation of HIV/AIDS clubs, debates on HIV/AIDS, provision of flyers and brochures on HIV/AIDS and public durbars.
According to the president, apart from the educational programme, a debate had been held for schools in the Nkwantanum Zone of the Municipality.
Addressing the youth later, he stated that the biggest challenge in the campaign against HIV/AIDS was how to influence Ghanaians, particularly the youth to change their attitude towards sex.
Mr Pinaman Asare urged the youth to take issues about the HIV/AIDS pandemic seriously and to stop associating it with superstition, because the disease had no cure.
