The Bolgatanga Basket Weavers Co-operative Club (BBWCC) has inaugurated a showroom in Accra, to serve as a point to market their products in the country.
The project is an initiative of the BBWCC, with funding and technical support from the United States African Development Foundation (USADF).
Launching the project, Mr Mahama Ayariga, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry said, the initiative was unique, since it provided the basket weavers with the opportunity to market their products on the international scene.
He, however, noted that there was the need for the weavers to take a critical look at the finishing of their products since it had been their major bane over the years.
“A good finishing will give the products the expected beauty and international touch for easy entry into the international market,” he stressed.
Mr Ayariga indicated that government had plans to support the craft village in Bolgatanga under the auspices of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority to help create more jobs and wealth for the people.
Mr James Awuya, Co-ordinator of BBWC said the vision of the club was to become leaders in the production of quality baskets and related products by 2015 to meet the expectations of customers.
He expressed the hope that the USADF through its local partners Mensah Duah and Co, would continue to offer the club the needed support for members to realise their targets.
The BBWCC started in 1995 as non- formal institution for the production of baskets in Bolgatanga.
It operates in eight communities spanning Yarigabiisi, Gambibgo, Yorogo, Nyariga, Yikine, Sumbrungu, Zaare and Tindonmolgo with a numerical strength of 1,050.
