Kofi Poku Manu, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has started the New Year on a bad note following the decision by some leading members of his Party to reject his Christmas package.
A cash of GH¢2,000 which the beleaguered Minister allegedly sent to the Ashanti Regional executives of the NDC, was unanimously rejected by the 20 Party gurus. A very reliable party executive who disclosed this to the Daily Guide newspaper on anonymity said the money was supposed to be shared among the 20 regional executives, with each person pocketing GH¢100. Explaining the party’s decision, he said Hon. Manu since becoming the Regional Minister, had decided not to show interest in the party’s affairs, let alone care about the welfare of its executives. He added that the NDC executives could not fathom why the Ashanti Regional Minister, this time around decided to dish out the money to them, hence their decision to reject it outright.
Giving a vivid account of how the money was sent to them and its eventual rejection, the source said the executives were attending a party organized for them by the NDC Regional Chairman, Yaw Obimpeh, when the incident occurred. According to him, the party was held at the Excelsa Lodge at Kwamo on New Year’s Day and whilst the party faithful were having a nice time, it was announced that the Minister had sent a package to the executives. Mr. Obimpeh, making the announcement said Hon.
Manu had sent an amount of GH¢2,000 to the executives through the Deputy Regional Treasurer of the Party, Evelyn Edith for them to share. The announcement of the minister’s package incurred the wrath of the NDC gurus who accused him of totally neglecting the Party which made it possible for him to occupy his present position. The visibly irritated NDC executives reportedly hurled unprintable words at the Regional Minister for his actions after which they unanimously told Evelyn Edith to return his money to him immediately.
The Minister had, since the event, seriously denied that it occurred, and even issued a statement claiming the reported rejection of his package was a “figment of someone’s imagination.
