A Burkinabe weekly is alleging that President J.E.A. Mills is in cahoots with disputed Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo to remain in power.
The newspaper, L’EVENEMENT alleged in its Christmas day edition that even though President Mills signed the December 7, 2010 ECOWAS communiqué enjoining Mr. Gbagbo to relinquish power, he has not completely closed his doors to the Ivorian leader.
The newspaper alleges that in Mr. Gbagbo’s attempt to secure his borders, he generously offered to help then candidates Mills and Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 presidential elections. The paper suggests that Mr. Gbagbo’s decision has paid off because he’s reaping what it says are the benefits. The publication alleges that Accra and Luanda are still open to emissaries of Mr. Gbagbo.
It alleges further that Accra is currently believed to be a hub and entry point of arms to Mr. Gbagbo and three Angolan fighter jets are currently positioned in Accra to come to the aid of the disputed Ivorian president. According to the paper, President Mills will in return for his support, receive from Angolan President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, many armoured vehicles for his presidential guard.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Ambassador in Burkina Faso has dismissed the allegations saying they are nothing but a fabrication calculated to tarnish the image of Ghana.
