Bayern Munich have announced the signing of Manchester City flop Jerome Boateng, with the defender signing a four-year deal in Germany.
The Bavarians had long been after a new defender and were also being linked with Chelsea’s Alex and Barcelona centre-back Gabriel Milito, but the 22-year-old Boateng was always their first option. Bayern initially failed to agree terms with City as they refused to meet the Premier League side’s hefty asking price, but both sides have now reached a compromise.
“The negotiations were very intensive and it took quite a while before we managed to bring talks to a good end. We have now signed our top candidate for the centre-back position in Jerome Boateng,” Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.
Sporting director Christian Nerlinger was equally pleased with the transfer and stated that Boateng topped head coach Jupp Heynckes’ shortlist.
“Jerome Boateng is a young Germany international who fits perfectly in the Bayern Munich philosophy. Additionally, he was Heynckes’ absolute top priority.”
Boateng started his professional career with Hertha and also represented Hamburg before joining Manchester City in the summer of 2010. He failed to make an impact at the English club and will now try and re-launch his career in the Bundesliga.
