Lyon defender John Mensah has warned his Ghana team-mates that the advantage of playing on African soil at the World Cup will only
count for so much.
The Black Stars open their campaign against Serbia on Sunday with Mensah hoping the side can overcome the loss of key midfielder Michael Essien and qualify from Group D, which also contains Australia and Germany.
“But just because it’s in Africa doesn’t mean an African team is going to win it. It’s not just African teams competing, it’s the whole world.” Mensah told The Journal newspaper.
He added: “You have to focus on what you are going to do. It won’t be easy for any team.
“As an African team we need to be determined and focused.
“We don’t need to think that because it’s in Africa we’ll have things our own way, we need to determine that ourselves.
“It won’t be easy but my colleagues and I are all determined to help our nation to deliver at the World Cup.”
