A total of 8,633 students over the weekend graduated from the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Out of the number, 6,031students pursued distance learning programmes, leaving the rest of the 2,604 to offer sandwich programmes.

One thousand, five hundred and thirty-six of the distance learning students pursued programmes such as Bachelor of Psychology and Foundation of Education, Diploma in Management Studies, Diploma in Commerce and Bachelor of Mamagement Studies, with the rest doing other courses.

The Vice Chancellor of UCC, Prof. D.D. Kuupole, disclosed this during the 47 th  congregation of the university at Cape Coast in the Central Region.

Prof. Kuupole disclosed that the university was progressing steadily in its expansion process and bringing quality tertiary education to the doorsteps of Ghanaians who would otherwise might not have had the opportunity to pursue further education.

He hinted that from the 2014/2015 academic year, the institution would open 12 new study centres at Axim, Enchi, Kasoa, Nandom, Lawra, Asankragwa, Bimbila, Bawku, Dodowa, Navorongo and Akosombo.

‘The opening of the new centers would also make access to our learning centers close to teachers and public sector workers who wish to further their studies as they still stay close to their places of work,’ he added.

The Vice Chancellor noted that in order to motivate the staff to improve the delivery of the academic programmes, UCC had instituted an award scheme to deserving course tutors and coordinators at the study center level.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, in a speech read on her behalf, charged the graduands to go back to their respective communities and be agents of positive change ‘that mother Ghana needs to propel her to greater heights.’

She commended the center for using its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to enhance the educational sector.
