Scrap dealers rake in on Kumasi central market fire rubble
Scrap dealers in Kumasi are raking in on Sunday’s fire disaster at the Kumasi Central Market to access materials for the rubble.
Forty shops and property running into millions of Ghana Cedis were destroyed in yet another disaster at the Kumasi Central Market on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
Thirty shops were affected in the earlier blaze in the night, but a second incident later Sunday saw 10 in flames when the fire re-ignited hours later.
The dealers, mainly young men, have been trooping to the market to pick pieces of metals from the debris.
When Luv Biz interacted with some of them, they admitted the danger in digging out metals under the weak structures.
However, they seemed not perturbed about the situation as they search for scrap metals.
Meanwhile, Ashanti Regional Fire Officer, Philip Arhin Mensah has warned the Kumasi Central Market will continue to be ravaged by fire until authorities act on fire reports.
Though the cause of the fire is yet to be established fire experts believe some of the victims could have been spared the pain if access was easier.
Mr. Mensah warns the city must brace up for the worst if the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly fails to act.
“The market is for someone and that person or institution must take care of the land. there have been many recommendations in fire reports to them. Ask yourselves what has happened to them. if the KMA does not implement recommendations, there would be more fire in this market and we cant do anything about it because we already know the cause’. he said.
The affected traders of Sunday’s fire disaster at the Kumasi central market are preparing to rebuild their shops.
As part of plans to get their business back on track, the traders have formally informed the market manager of the Kumasi central market.
Though Kumasi Mayor and other KMA officials have visited the place, the traders are scheduled to meet Kojo Bonsu in due time on ways to reconstruct their structures.
