BMW RMG driver Marco Wittmann dominant at DTM in Hungary
The German went into the third round of the season in third place in the drivers’ championship and produced a stunning drive to claim victory, and 25 points to move him top of the standings.
Having secured front position on the grid for the race the BMW RMG driver controlled proceedings after a solid start and had a healthy cushion throughout the 41 laps.
Behind him there was plenty of jostling for position with Timo Glock, Antonio Felix da Costa (both BMW MTEK) and Maxime Martin (BMW RMG) all leading the chase, however a couple of collisions for Glock saw him drop out of the points.
Miguel Molina (Audi Abt) bided his time in the chasing pack before claiming second place, while Bruno Spengler (BMW Schnitzer) secured the final podium place after coming from sixth with two laps remaining after Nico Muller spun out.
After his solid start Wittman was able to grow his lead from two seconds on lap nine to nearly four by lap 15, and as he took the chequered flag the gap had risen to 6.615 seconds.
Previous championship leader Mike Rockenfeller surrendered top spot after a 10th-place finish, while Christian Vietoris was unable to challenge as he found himself five laps behind.
Wittmann moves top of the standings with 50 points, while Rockenfeller holds onto second place 19 points behind and Edoardo Mortara moves into third after finishing in fourth place.
