Various businesses operating at the country’s ports have welcomed the appointment of the Acting Director of the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority (GPHA), Paul Asare Ansah.

One of such is the group of key business associations who were opposing the Terminal Handling Charges (THC).

They argue that Mr. Ansah is well equipped, experienced and remains the best person to man the GPHA.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo in a statement last week appointed Mr. Paul Asare Ansah to be the acting Director-General of the GPHA.

His appointment will among other things require him to improve the efficiency and productivity of the ports as well as enhance the quality of service delivered.

In an interview with Citi Business News, Spokesperson for the Business Association, Adobea Asiama-Aboagye said she is hopeful the new appointee will solve all issues pertaining to the ports.

“From his profile that he we have seen we believe that he is capable. He has an added advantage of having served as chair for several sub-committees of the GPHA for about two decades and that puts him in a very good position to do the job.”

She further reiterated their expectations for the newly appointed GPHA boss.

“Of course we have some issues as shippers within the ports and so we have expectations of him since he knows the problems. He has been part of several groups trying to solve problems if you look at his credentials he has been able to win certain awards for the GPHA and that is an indication that he knows the problem and he is capable of solving them we are expecting for example a higher quality of service within the ports.”

Meanwhile the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders is optimistic the Ghana Ports will see a positive turnaround with the appointment of Mr Paul Ansah.

A member of the Technical Committee for the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders, John Mantey exclaimed.

“One unique thing about Paul Ansah is his ability to engage various stakeholders on issues affecting the sector. Without that you will not succeed because you will make a decision where somebody somewhere else will be affected and you know it affects the industry or the group of persons,”

The port is also a critical industry as such decision without input from stakeholders may lead to challenges eventually. So it’s a good appointment and we hope that he does well and we wish him all the best.”
