Women Deliver Announces ‘Dr. Fred Sai Scholarship For Young African Women’

ACCRA, Ghana, June 30, 2014 – Women Deliver is proud to announce a new scholarship program that will help bring young African women to its triennial conferences, beginning with Women Deliver 2016.

Every three years, the Dr. Fred Sai Scholarship for Young African Women – named in honor of Ghanaian sexual and reproductive health and rights advocate and Women Deliver Board Member Emeritus Dr. Fred Sai – will be given to five African women under the age of 30 who have shown extraordinary leadership on sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Scholarship winners will be selected through a competitive online application process. Women Deliver will look for young women who are passionate about improving the health and well-being of girls and women; who can contribute meaningfully to conference sessions and discussions; and who will strive to incorporate lessons learned to work in their home countries.

Winners will receive an all-expense-paid trip to attend a Women Deliver conference, where they will have access to high-level plenaries, concurrent sessions, skills-building workshops and more. They will have opportunities to meet new advocates and potential partners, strengthen existing relationships, and learn new strategies to drive impact at home and globally.

‘Women Deliver is thrilled to honor Dr. Sai and his legacy through this new scholarship program,’ said Jill Sheffield, Founder and President of Women Deliver. ‘Dr. Sai has worked tirelessly throughout his career to improve the lives of girls and women in Ghana and around the world – and we hope this scholarship will inspire and empower a new generation of African female leaders to build on his incredible work.’

The scholarship program was announced at an event in Ghana on Friday, held in honor of Dr. Sai, who celebrated his 90th birthday last week. Dr. Sai is a renowned champion for girls’ and women’s health and rights with a wide range of experience, from treating women as a young physician to advising the Ghanaian government on sexual and reproductive health policies.

The scholarship application for Women Deliver 2016 will be available on Women Deliver’s website in mid-2015.
