According to commonly-accepted hierarchy, the Emir of Kano is behind the Sultan of Sokoto in terms of influence, but ahead of the Shehu of Borno due to bigger population of the state. Kano has undoubted religious, socio-economic and political significance in the whole region of sub-Saharan Africa.

However, according to another classification, Kano is fourth in the Islamic hierarchy of the Northern Nigerian Hausa-Fulani Islamic structure, being behind Sokoto, Gwandu, and Bornu. Kano, however, has its own significance as the most populous of the emirates in the north, and indeed in.

The current monarch of Borno, Shehu Abubakar Garbai Ibni Elkanemi, was also visiting Sokoto State on Monday.
