Rawlings has mental problems – Boakye Gyan declares

The former head of Government and Official Spokesperson for the erstwhile Armed Forces Revolution Council (AFRC), Major Boakye Gyan (rtd) has described his former colleague, ex President Jerry John Rawlings as a person suffering from mental challenges, making him engage in what he calls ‘illogical’ accusations against past and present governments.

In the retired major’s opinion, ‘[former President] Rawlings is not mentally together’, hence his claim that every regime that has ruled Ghana has been corrupt except his 19 years at the helm of affairs.

In a statement issued on the occasion of the 35th Anniversary of the June 4 coup, former President Rawlings alleged that corruption is on the rise in Ghana because the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he founded after the December 31, 1982 coup, had abandoned its principle of “service to God and country”.

Ex-President Rawlings again blamed his predecessor, former President John Agyekum Kufuor for the current economic crisis the country is facing as well as the increase in corruption, saying the man who ruled from January 2001 to 2009 is responsible for “setting in motion the moral and economic crisis Ghanaians are experiencing today”.

But speaking Thursday on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show in commemoration of the June 4 coup – executed by the AFRC and which freed the Flight Lt Jerry John Rawlings from a treason trial for a failed coup – Osahene Boakye Gyan, who was de facto leader of the coup, expressed disappointment in his former colleague, saying no mentally sound person will behave like President Rawlings.

‘A mentally sound person will not behave himself like he is doing. By his attitude, he has completely forfeited his right to be respected as a former president, most especially when he is complaining like an office messenger, against every government but his own,’ Maj Boakye Gyan told Captain Smart, host of the show.

Maj Boakye Gyan insisted that Mr Rawlings cannot escape the tar of corruption, given the many documented cases of corruption which occurred under his watch.

Meanwhile, a former senior officer in the AFRC regime, Naval Captain Asaase Gyimah (Rtd) has warned of an Arab spring-style uprising in Ghana considering the level of corruption and injustice in the society today, similar to the conditions that gave birth to the June 4th uprising.

He believes the “winner takes all” nature of the country’s politics is a major source of danger and could make it difficult for the sitting president to exert effective control if the anger of the citizenry gets out of hand.

Also speaking on the programme, Capt Assase Gyimah opined that the current crop of politicians in the country are only interested in making money for their family members instead of working in the interest of the state.

‘As people in the country, we don’t like our country, we don’t respect the country, we don’t respect the laws,’ Assase Gyimah emphasized.

The former military officer declared that Ghana has almost become a lawless state, and has therefore called on the John Mahama administration to work hard to meet the aspirations of the citizenry. Story by Ghana/Adomonline.com/Abednego Asante Asiedu
