Williams’ overtime winner saw the Kings to a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers in game one at the Staples Center on Wednesday.
But not before the 2012 champions recovered from a 2-0 deficit to force the extra period, and Williams said there were areas to work on.
“It certainly helps that we’ve done it (come from behind) time and time again,” Williams said.
“It’s a great result of the hockey game for us, definitely, but we have a lot of things to clean up. Certainly not our best game by any standards.
“But we were able to get it done. That’s the most important thing.”
On his match-winning goal, set up by Mike Richards after a Dan Girardi turnover, Williams was happy to make the shot past Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.
“Everything usually offensively starts in our zone. Richards made a great play getting the puck out. We screwed up a three on two royally,” Williams said.
“Fortunately for us, one of their D men was following, I was sitting in front of the net with the puck, I was able to make a shot.”
Kings coach Darryl Sutter praised Williams, whose goal was his eighth of the play-offs.
“He’s a really good player for our hockey team. He’s our best right winger every night consistently,” he said.
New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault hailed goalie Lundqvist, who finished the game with 40 saves in an impressive performance.
“He was the reason why we went to overtime. He gave us a chance,” he said.
“When you get to overtime, a lot of times it’s a bounce, it’s a shot. Tonight they got it.”
