Polesitter Jimmie Johnson reigns in Charlotte

Johnson greeted Victory Lane for the first time in 2014 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, making it back-to-back race wins for the garage after Sprint Cup Series leader Jeff Gordon triumphed at the 5-hour Energy 400.

Gordon preserved his lead in the championship through 12 races, courtesy of a seventh-place finish.

Johnson led for 165 of 400 laps, while Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick held first position for exactly a quarter of the race before finishing second.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Matt Kenseth rounded out the podium, and held the lead for 33 laps.

Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Jamie McMurray, Michael Waltrip Racing’s Brian Vickers and Gordon were the next drivers in.

Kurt Busch, for Stewart-Haas Racing, failed to finish due to a blown engine, as his hopes of completing both the NASCAR race and the Indy 500 – an IndyCar event held earlier in the day – within 24 hours were dashed.
