Fabio Aru claims maiden Grand Tour win in stage 15 of Giro d’Italia

The Astana rider claimed success on the 225kilometre ride from Valdengo to Montecampione to mark his first Grand Tour success, achieving the feat on home soil.

Aru sealed victory with a powerful attack on the final climb in Lombardy to win by 21 seconds from Fabio Duarte (Colombia).

Duarte’s Colombian compatriot Nairo Quintana (Movistar) was a second further back in third, while Europcar’s Pierre Rolland came fourth.

General classification leader Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step) lost more time as he finished fifth, 42 seconds adrift of Aru and over 20 behind Duarte.

However, Uran’s losses were offset somewhat by those of BMC rider Cadel Evans, who could only secure 10th place to fall a further 31 seconds behind the Colombian in the standings.

Uran now leads overall by one minute and three seconds from Evans, with Pole Rafal Majka (Tinkoff-Saxo) third after ending the latest stage in sixth.

But the big mover is Aru, whose triumph has seen him surge into fourth place overall and within two minutes and 24 seconds of Uran.

Quintana sits a further 16 seconds off the pace ahead of the final week of racing, which starts on Tuesday with a 139km run from Ponte di Legno – Val Martello/Martelltal following Monday’s rest day.
