Metropolitan and Municipal District Chief Executives have been urged to initiate projects and programmes that will improve the living conditions of the people in their respective areas.
The Minister of Local Government and Rural development, Mr Akwasi Opong-Fosu, who made the call said it was only through that the country would attain the needed development under the Better Ghana agenda.
He again urged the MMDCEs to ensure effective implementation of government policies and programmes at the grassroots.
Mr Opong-Fosu made the call in an interview with the Daily Graphic at a closing ceremony of the MMDCEs conference in Accra last Friday. The Conference
The three-day conference which began on May 6, 2014, brought together 216 MMDCEs from the 10 regions of the country to deliberate on the theme: “Implementing the Better Ghana Agenda–the Sixth Milestones”.
Earlier at the conference, the MDDCEs were taken through the various codes of conducts for public officers and other areas needed for effective delivery of their mandates for development.
Making reference to the saying “I shall pass this way but once, if i have any good in me, let me do it now for i may not pass this way again” at the ceremony, the Minister said the office they were occupying was temporal and as such there was the need for them to make a mark while in office so that they could proudly make reference to their contributions, when they were no longer there. Mr Opong-Fosu advised the MMDCEs to be passionate in carrying out their duties adding “apart from purpose and responsibility, if you don’t have the passion you may have all the good intension but it will remain in your head or on your tables”.
According to him, deliberations they had at the conference should inspire them to work towards the advancement of the better Ghana agenda. Develop Action Plans
The Minister advised them to develop action plans on their priority areas for implementation, adding that the ministry will be available to assist them with all the technical support. Resolutions
At the end of the conference the MMDCEs resolved they would run people-centered local governance and decentralised policies to create jobs and wealth for Ghanaians.
“We shall continue to ensure transparency and accountability at the various MMDAs”.
According to them sanitation and waste management shall remain one of their topmost priorities as MMDCEs.
They also indicated that they shall provide quality administrative and political leadership to the people of Ghana in accordance with the code of conduct for political office-holders even in the midst of provocation among other things. Recommendation
The MMDCEs called on the government to, among other things, establish a Rural Development Grant for Rural District Assemblies who needed development most, to prevent rural urban drift.
