Two suspected car snatchers who allegedly attacked a taxi driver and shot him in the face before making away with his taxi have been arrested by the police.
The suspects — Ebenezer Alawogbe, 25, a driver, and Enoch Kwame Gedege, a 24-year-old apprentice carpenter — are currently in custody.
They are alleged to have shot the taxi driver, Emmanuel Gedu, on the left side of his face, before taking over the keys to his Nissan Almera taxi, with registration number GR 5602-13.
Taxi driver
The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, told a news conference in Accra yesterday that the two suspects hired the services of the taxi driver on April 21, 2014 to take them from Nsawam to a nearby town, Kwesi Tenten.
“But while they were yet to reach their destination, the two pulled a gun and shot him, damaging half of the driver’s face,” he said.
He said the driver was on admission at the Nsawam Hospital.
He said police intelligence led to the arrest of the suspects, who had sold the taxi for GH¢2,000, for which the buyer made an initial payment of GH¢800.
Car retrieved
Mr Yohuno said the Airport Police arrested Alawogbe upon a tip-off when he showed up at the Accra Shopping Mall to receive the rest of the payment for the stolen car from the buyer.
According to him, Alawogbe later led the police to the hideout of his accomplice, Gedege, at Agbogba in Accra.
The car has been retrieved, he added.
