Mrs. Bola Obasanjo, wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, wife of Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun on Monday joined hundreds of women in Abeokuta the Ogun State capital, to protest the abduction of over 200 school girls in Chibok, Borno State.
The protest which the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief (Mrs.) Alaba Lawson, members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, market women and female artisans also took part in, started at about 8am at the M.K.O Abiola Stadium, Kuto area and from there, the women moved through IBB Boulevard and ended at the Ogun State House of Assembly complex, where the governor’s wife presented their protest letter to the Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi, to deliver to President Jonathan.
Also addressing the lawmakers, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Elizabeth Sonubi called on states and National Assembly members to take action towards releasing the girls from their abductors.
The women also stopped at the governor’s office where they met Gov. Amosun and demanded that the Federal government act quickly in securing the release of the girls who have been missing for three weeks now.
The women carried placards which had inscriptions like ‘Kidnapped school girls must be found,’ ‘Our girls are not sex machine,’ ‘Bring back our girls,’ ‘Haba!, this is barbaric in the 21st century,’ ‘Let all our women rise to save our girls,’ and others.
Since the abduction of the schoolgirls from Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State on the 14th of March and government’s failure to secure their release, it’s been one protest or the other across the nation even outside Nigeria.
There’s been protest in Kaduna, Lagos, Abuja, Washington DC, New York and other places.
