National Security Summons NPP, NDC Leaders Over Election Attacks

The leadership of the main opposition New Patriotic Party and the ruling National Democratic Congress has met the top hierarchy of the National Security and the Greater Accra regional Police command over security concerns relating to protests of irate party supporters following Friday’s polls.

There have been reports of isolated attacks and reprisal attacks between members of the two main parties after the Electoral Commission declared John Mahama as President. At the meeting, were the National Chairmen of the two main parties and National Security Coordinator Larry Gbevlo lartey.

NPP General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie in an interview with XYZ News said the discussions were fruitful and cordial.

Meanwhile, the Police have restored calm in the Odododiodioo Constituency after riots broke between supporters of the two main parties earlier today. The disturbances were sparked off by an alleged attack on an elderly woman who was in a political party T-shirt near UTC at the Makola market in Accra.

Some minutes later two other men in party T-shirts in the same constituency were also attacked by alleged rivals. Store-keeper Albert Kojo Yeboah told XYZ News that the situation worsened after one party brought reinforcement to avenge their colleagues.

The district Commander of the Jamestown Police station however says none of the thugs involved in the riots have been arrested. DSP Francis Somia stated that the disturbance would be treated like a criminal matter rather than a political incident.
