Tape: Mahama promised 'free' SHS in 2008 - NPP

John Mahama

With barely 48 hours to the crucial December 7 polls, a tape recording on which a voice said to be that of President Mahama, then running mate to the late president John Mills, is heard promising free secondary education.

According to the tape recorded during the 2008 campaign and being circulated by the opposition NPP, Mr. Mahama said the NDC would make secondary education free for students of community day schools while the fees of those in boarding schools will be heavily subsidized.

The NPP which has been espousing the free SHS policy says the revelation exposes the hypocrisy of the NDC on its (NPP) flagship policy.

The NDC been fiercely criticised the NPP’s free SHS policy raising questions about its feasibility due to what the party says is the lack of infrastructure and other factors that would make the policy run smoothly.

Mr. Ohene Ntow, a one time General Secretary of the NPP was the first to reveal the existence of the tape recording which is believed to have been done in 2008 when the NDC was battling the NPP for the presidency.

He made the revelation on Joy FM’s election programme Decision 2012 Tuesday hosted by Paul Adom Otchere.

The former NPP scribe says the revelation exposes the NDC’s desperation to hold on to power.
