First Lady Convoy Kills Mother, Daughter

A Nissan pick-up vehicle belonging to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Achiase constituency of the Eastern region on Saturday knocked down and killed one Comfort Dzisah and her 15-year-old student daughter at Akyem Batabi, near Akyem Oda in the Eastern region.

One other student, Janet Agyeiwaa, 20, who was also knocked down in the freaky accident, is in a critical condition at the Oda Government Hospital.

The driver of the NDC vehicle, Yaw Adu, who was driving at top speed from Koforidua to Achiase, ran into speed rumps in the town and lost control, hitting Madam Comfort and her daughter, Christiana Misime, who were standing by the roadside, killing them instantly.

The vehicle also hit Janet Ageiwaa, who was also standing by the roadside, before somersaulting into a ditch.

Janet and Christiana, both students of Akroso Senior School, were waiting for a vehicle to take them to school.

The accident has thrown the town of Batabi and the Akroso Senior High School into a state of mourning.

Driver of the vehicle and two other persons who were onboard the vehicle, are also injured and are receiving treatment at the Oda Government Hospital.

First Lady Convoy

It will be recalled that one of the vehicles in the convoy of the First Lady, Lordina Mahama was involved in a similar accident at Anyinam in Eastern region recently, also killing one woman and injuring two others.

It is not clear if the First Lady as riding in the convoy when the accident happened.

The driver of the vehicle, a Ford Expedition with registration number GW 907-09, had lost control and hit the woman identified as Theresa Bawa, 64, killing her instantly and also hitting her 9-year-old daughter, Juliana, who was reported to be in a critical condition at the regional hospital in Koforidua.

The driver, identified as Mr. Ahiadze, 56, was arrested by the police and released later to report again to the police.

The other victim, a bicycle rider, was treated at the Enyiresi Government Hospital and discharged.

The driver alleged that he was crossed by the bicycle rider and in an attempt to avoid hitting him, lost control and rather hit the old lady and her grand-daughter who were going home on the other side of the road.

However the son of Madam Bawa, Alfred Osei Dusu said the deceased was returning from a nearby plot where she had gone to pluck Okro but was killed by one of the speeding vehicles in the convoy.
