Johannesburg – A man who fled from the police when he was caught speeding was arrested in Florida Park on Thursday, said Johannesburg metro police.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the man was stopped by the police for driving 94km/h in a 60km/h zone in Montgomery Park.

He did not stop, but sped off, almost running over a metro police officer.

“The number plate of the silver BMW was captured on the speed camera as he drove away,” said Minnaar.

“The car belonged to the man’s father, who was surprised to see officers pitch up at his house, but he explained that his son had used the car yesterday [Wednesday].”

The man, 26, was arrested and would face charges of attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, and reckless or negligent driving.

He would appear soon in the Sophiatown Magistrate’s Court.
