Nasarawa lawmakers deliberating on the impeachment proceeding on Friday in Lafia
Law makers at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA), on Friday afternoon completed an emergency session at the Assembly complex in Lafia, where they have read out a warning ahead of an apparent impeachment process against the governor if he fails to end the crises rocking parts of the state in seven days.
The impeachment option was wrapped up and made ready for delivery to the governor, in barely an hour.
House Majority Leader, Godiya Akwashiki (PDP, Nasarawa-Eggon-West), read out the day’s order including “House Resolution on Security Issues and other Sensitive Matters in the State”, as well as a “Deliberation on the House Resolution on Security”, and proceeded to read out the warning for impeachment process. The motion for the one-week warning was seconded for deliberation, by House Minority Leader, Adamu Maikatako (CPC, Lafia-Central).
Akwashiki, who stood for over 12 minutes, immediately after the Speaker, Musa Ahmed Mohammed (PDP, Nasarawa-Central) declared the emergency sitting open, at about 12:50pm, also read the resolutions of the last sitting which asked Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, to expedite actions at stemming the lingering violent crises which have engulfed much of the southern zone of the state in months now, without an end to them.
The Majority Leader observed however, that the governor failed to comply with the resolution, to act on the raging gun violence, which has sacked man communities, and displaced thousands now, but has folded his hands to watch while the people are, daily being killed.
He observed that a situation of complete breakdown of law and order, leading to arson in which over 10 persons have been reportedly killed in Agyaragu, an outskirt of Lafia, on Wednesday, was not only disturbing, but smacked of Governor Al-Makura’s government’s incompetence to comply with constitutional provisions to protect lives and property in the state.
Akwashiki reads that the House resolved that Al-makura be given seven days from today, to end the violence in the zone, or members will invoke Section 188 (1), to impeach him.
The provision reads: “The Governor or Deputy Governor of a State may be removed from office in accordance with the provisions of this section.”
Members took turns to talk. Deputy Speaker, Eleisha Agwadu (PDP, Obi II), said the governor appeared the more incompetent in the face of rising security challenges in the state, while Mohammed Baba Ibaku (PDP, Udege/Loko) said the governor is insensitive to the plight of the people he is leading, after he placed his hands on the Holy book, and swore to protect them.
Francis Orogo (PDP, Keana), said Al-Makura had demonstrated he was in love with violence, when , weeks ago, he refused to assent to a bill to outlaw thuggery in the state, just as he raised concern that the governor, last Saturday, sided with arsonists who engaged soldiers and men of the SSS with gun violence at Nasarawa-Eggon, in what he called “a romance with arsonists.”
Philip Gyunka (PDP, Akwanga-South) said “the governor is aiding and abating crime”, just as Abdulkareem Usman (PDP, Wamba), said the governor has demonstrated clear love for violent persons.
Yahaya Ohinoyi Usman (PDP, Umaisha-Ugya) moved the motion for the adoption of the warning for impeachment process, and was seconded by Peter Mbucho (PDP, Akwanga-South.
The speaker just ruled on the motion, accordingly.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Abdullahi Mohammed told Daily Trust on phone that he had no comments to make, because he had not seen the warning of impeachment. “When I see the notice, I shall make the comments, but not now”, Barr. Mohammed said.
