The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers has hit out at government authorities over incessant cases of building collapse across the country.
Speaking in Benin, Edo State, on Friday, ahead of the body’s 43rd annual conference, NIESV President, Mr. Emeka Eleh, said the institute was adopting more stringent measures to check the menace of building collapse, including its renewed onslaught on quackery and enforcement of standards.
He said, “We are very concerned about the issue of quackery and this we are tackling. For us, we believe the issue is a serious one and we are working towards checking it. Whenever you see a collapsed building, it is because somebody has compromised.
“In developed countries, it is only certified persons that handle such things because housing is strategic to development. Ultimately, it is the state that should be held responsible for collapsed buildings because of lack of supervision. Government should staff their approval units very well and strengthen their post-approval departments.”
“Those people you see in the streets are not estate surveyors and valuers. Some of our members also have licences for estate agency and we are also estate agents, but estate agency is just a minor part of what we do,” he added.
