Aliu Mahama deserves a national honour – Kufuor

Aliu Mahama

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor is advocating for a special national award in honour of the late Vice President Ahaji Aliu Mahama for his tremendous contribution towards Ghana’s development.

He said the late Vice President’s vision to improve the life of Ghanaians and his leadership cannot go unnoticed.

Former President Kufuor made the appeal in an exclusive interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday.

Many people have described the late Aliu Mahama who passed away Friday at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness as an epitome of peace and a decent politician.

Even though his sudden demise has come as a shock to many, the only consolation they have is that he [Aliu]is resting in the bosom of God, he said.

Recounting fond memories he had with the late Aliu Mahama who served as his vice for eight years, former President Kufuor said their working relationship was very cordial.

According to him, the late veep was an exceptional leader whose perseverance propelled Ghana’s development.

He also described his late partner as a sincere and faithful Muslim who made him[Kufuor] feel at ease working with him at the presidency.

“Aliu was a dependable colleague whose work at the presidency was valuable. He is a type of person I will want on my side in any day,” he added.

Mr. Kufuor stated that the nation and to a large extend the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have lost a priceless gift and thus a national award in recognition for his [Aliu] hard work will be most appropriate.

Asked by Ekosii Sensit-in host Kofi Adoma whether the death of the former vice president is a good omen for the NPP ahead of the December polls, former President Kufuor said God is the only judge.

He noted that victory for the NPP has always been Aliu Mahama’s wish when he was alive and thus if that happens, the party will be very pleased.

Mr. Kufuor promised his support to ensure the late vice president is given a befitting burial.

Meanwhile, the state has declared five days national mourning for the late Aliu Mahama in recognition for his selfless service to the country.
