Durban – With more than 1 665 deaths in nine months on KZN’s roads, the province’s transport department has declared war on motorists who break road rules.

On Thursday, transport MEC Willies Mchunu will launch a new high-tech camera system that will ensure that transgressors are caught.

The Average Speed Over Distance (ASD) technology and the Smart Roadblock cameras will be able to detect speedsters and un-roadworthy vehicles using wireless technology linked to the National Traffic Information System – eNatis.

On the busy N3 and other roads with high accidents rates, the Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras (ANPR) for the ASD system have been strategically positioned and are working.

KZN department spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said motorists could no longer take a chance by slowing down where they knew there were cameras and then speeding up again afterwards.

Ncalane said the ASD system was already recording the number plate information of every vehicle passing the ANPR cameras which, in turn, was captured by a roadside computer.

“If anything is found to be wrong, fines will be issued to the motorist, and police will react accordingly,” he said.

The system was intended to instil discipline in motorists and to curb road deaths, Ncalane said. – The Mercury
