Community sues commissioner, monarch over election

ENUGU—THE people of Egwu Achi community in Oji-River Local Government area of Enugu State have dragged a commissioner in the state and their traditional ruler to court over alleged plans to impose a new town union executive on them.

In the suit No: HOR/36/2012 which has Godwin Ogenyi, Commissioner for Poverty Reduction and Igwe Victor Meniru whose stool is seriously being contested in court as respondents, the community is seeking an order restraining the respondents from further proceeding to install a new executive.

Secretary of Egwu Achi Town Union, Mr. John Dibe, who instituted the action on behalf of the community, is also questioning the powers of the respondents to unilaterally dissolve the town union executive without recourse to the constitution of the people.  He argued that the commissioner in the said position of arbiter has “displayed bias; and has no colour of right whatsoever to do what he has purported and/or threatens to do.
